INEC Seeks Stronger UN Partnership for Election Integrity

On Thursday, INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan called for a deeper partnership with the United Nations to strengthen the credibility, transparency, and inclusiveness of elections in Nigeria.

During a meeting in Abuja with UN Resident Humanitarian Coordinator Moham Fall and UNDP representative Ms. Elsi Attafuah, Amupitan reiterated INEC's commitment to improving electoral processes.

He stressed the necessity of addressing electoral challenges in Africa, linking them to broader developmental issues. Amupitan highlighted ongoing technological reforms, including the introduction of the results viewing portal (IREV) to enhance transparency in election results.

He also mentioned efforts to clean the voter register by removing deceased individuals and eliminating duplicates. The INEC Chairman emphasized the need for INEC to become the primary source of credible electoral data in Nigeria.

He outlined upcoming elections, including the Ekiti and Osun off-cycle governorship polls and the 2027 general elections, reaffirming UN's commitment to supporting Nigeria's democratic success.
