INEC Urges National Assembly to Fast-track Electoral Act Amendment for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, called on the National Assembly to expedite the ongoing amendment of the Electoral Act in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

INEC emphasized the importance of timely amendments to ensure public trust and confidence in the electoral process. The commission highlighted challenges such as voter registration anomalies and incomplete records, aiming to address these issues through a nationwide voter revalidation exercise.

INEC plans to conduct voter registration phases from August 2025 to August 2026. Additionally, INEC received letters of intent from 171 political associations seeking registration, with some facing challenges meeting constitutional and regulatory requirements.

The commission is set to announce successful associations soon.
