INEC Warns of Potential Disruption to 2027 Election Timetable Due to Delayed Electoral Act Amendment

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, expressed concerns during a quarterly consultative meeting in Abuja about the potential disruption of the 2027 general election timetable due to delays in amending the Electoral Act.

Amupitan emphasized the need for adjustments to be made in line with the existing legal framework to accommodate the amendments. INEC has already concluded its election timetable activities based on the current legal framework but requires adjustments following the passage of the amendment.

The commission is urging the National Assembly to expedite the amendment process to provide clarity ahead of the 2027 polls. INEC is also conducting a nationwide voter revalidation exercise to ensure a credible voter register for the upcoming elections.

The commission has recruited and trained ad hoc staff and configured devices for result accreditation. Meanwhile, the House of Representatives is working on harmonizing the Electoral Act amendment bill to ensure its passage soon.
