INEC Calls for Electoral Act Rewrite Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, has urged for a rewrite of the Electoral Act to make it more comprehensible for ordinary Nigerians in preparation for the 2027 general elections. This appeal was made during a town hall meeting organized by the Civil Society Network for Electoral Integrity in Abuja.

Amupitan highlighted that the current law is complex and needs to be rewritten in simpler language to ensure that every Nigerian can easily read and understand its provisions. He also addressed the controversies surrounding the real-time transmission of election results, explaining that while the idea is not flawed, challenges with network infrastructure across the country hinder instant result transmission.

He cited the recent FCT area council elections as an example, where results were delayed. Amupitan stressed that simplifying the law would enhance public trust and reduce post-election disputes, urging lawmakers to begin amending the act early in preparation for the upcoming elections.
