Tinubu's 2027 Campaign Faces Insecurity and Economic Woes

President Bola Tinubu's campaign for a second term in the 2027 presidential election is challenged by four significant issues: insecurity, economic hardship, his past US drug-forfeiture case, and questions regarding his academic and NYSC credentials. The opposition aims to leverage these issues as a referendum on his administration, emphasizing the lived experiences of Nigerians over official statistics.

The ruling party, APC, counters by highlighting economic reforms, increased GDP growth, and military operations against insecurity. Tinubu was officially presented as the APC's presidential candidate in May 2023, with the election scheduled for January 2027.

A survey by SBM Intelligence revealed that nearly 80% of Nigerians believe the country is heading in the wrong direction, with 45% citing economic hardship and insecurity as primary concerns. The opposition's focus on insecurity is underscored by alarming statistics, including 7,825 abductions and 1,142 deaths reported between July 2025 and June 2026, indicating a worsening security crisis.
