APC Chieftain Warns of Democracy Threat Ahead of 2027

Jonathan Vatsa, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former public secretary in Niger State, expressed concerns that the judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may threaten Nigeria's democracy as the country approaches the 2027 general elections. Speaking at a Thanksgiving service marking his 64th birthday, Vatsa described the current political climate as precarious, attributing potential chaos to the failure of these institutions to act impartially.

He criticized the APC for its internal issues, claiming that the party's primary elections, which took place nearly two months ago, were marred by deceit and unfair practices. Vatsa stated that 80 percent of candidates for the state governorship emerged through consensus arrangements, labeling the process as the biggest political deceit since 1999.

He warned that perceived injustices could incite rebellion within the party and lead to political turmoil, urging that the judiciary and INEC be held accountable for any descent into anarchy.
