Ogun Monarch Supports Iyabo Obasanjo for 2027 Governorship

Oba Akintund Akinyemi of the Eselu Iselu Kingdom in Yewa North Local Government Area, Ogun State, has expressed support for Professor Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in her bid for the 2027 Ogun State governorship election. During a private visit to Obasanjo's palace, the monarch praised her substantial pedigree and qualifications, advocating for increased inclusion of women in political leadership to enhance governance and national development.

He referenced historical figures from Ogun State, such as Efunsetan Aniwuara and contemporary leaders, to underscore the impact of women in politics. Akinyemi urged men to reconsider the limitations placed on women's political participation, drawing parallels with global democracies.

He clarified that his support does not constitute a royal endorsement but reflects a personal belief in her right to contest. Iyabo Obasanjo has registered with the Progressives Congress and declared her intent to run for the governorship, stating her commitment to public service.
