Iyabo Obasanjo Bello Declares Independence in 2027 Bid

Iyabo Obasanjo Bello, a former senator, announced her intention to pursue the Ogun State governorship under the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 general elections. During a briefing on Friday, she expressed that at nearly 60 years old, she does not need her father, former President Olusegun Obasanjo's support.

She noted that while her parents are alive, she does not consult them for every career decision. Iyabo stated that she has confidence in her candidacy and believes she is a formidable candidate with a strong track record.

She previously lost her senatorial seat but does not intend to seek re-election. Instead, she postponed a Harvard fellowship due to pressure and felt blessed by her previous experiences.

She has been involved in grassroots campaigns and has a personal campaign fund derived from her investments in the American stock market over the past three decades. Iyabo also welcomed the moment for women in Nigerian politics, especially with the pending gender reservation seat bill in the National Assembly.
