Iyabo Obasanjo Advocates Consensus for 2027 Elections

Iyabo Obasanjo, a former senator representing Ogun Central, has expressed her support for a consensus method of candidate selection as the All Progressives Congress (APC) prepares for the 2027 general elections. She believes this approach can yield credible electoral leaders and dismissed concerns that it might lead to unpopular candidates.

Iyabo, the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, stated that the consensus does not mean party leaders would overlook the views of members and voters. She highlighted her previous public service experience as a strength in her bid for the APC governorship ticket in Ogun State.

Recently, she defected from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC and has shown confidence in her prospects for the upcoming elections. Iyabo also noted the renewed debate on consensus following amendments to Nigeria's electoral act, which now allows for both direct and indirect primaries as well as the consensus option.
