Opposition Parties Unite for Single Candidate in 2027

During a summit held on Saturday in Ibadan, Oyo State, opposition parties in Nigeria resolved to present a single presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections. This decision aims to enhance their chances against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The summit, which included leaders from various parties such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC), People's Democratic Party (PDP), New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP), and others, highlighted the existing threats facing the country, including insecurity and economic hardship. The communiqué issued at the end of the summit called for the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, citing partisanship favoring the APC.

The opposition also demanded a review of the Electoral Act 2026 to remove provisions perceived as threats to electoral integrity. The summit concluded with a call for unity among opposition parties to provide a credible alternative in the upcoming elections, emphasizing the need for a collective effort to restore confidence in Nigeria's democratic process.
