Showunmi Declares Ogun Governorship Bid for 2027

On Friday, Otunba Segun Showunmi, a chieftain of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), declared his intent to run for the Ogun State governorship in the 2027 elections. This announcement was made during a visit to the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) secretariat in Abeokuta.

Showunmi emphasized the need for leadership in Ogun State to be determined through a competitive process rather than being handed to individuals without contest. He called on opposition parties and political groups to form grassroots coalitions to challenge the ruling party, which he criticized for its poor performance.

Showunmi acknowledged the historical power shift demand from Ogun West, noting that the zone has not produced a governor in 50 years. He insisted that the campaign should focus on credible contests rather than monetary inducements and urged political parties to exercise caution in candidate selection to avoid poor choices.

Abayomi Sanyaolu, chairman of IPAC Ogun State, welcomed Showunmi's bid, while Abayomi Arabambi, vice chairman of the Labour Party in the Southwest, called for better leadership and greater public participation.
