Showunmi Declares Candidacy for Ogun 2027 Governorship

On Friday, Otunba Segun Showunmi, a chieftain of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), announced his intention to run for the Ogun State governorship in the 2027 elections during a visit to the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) secretariat in Abeokuta. He called for support from political groups to build a grassroots coalition capable of challenging the dominant political parties.

Showunmi criticized the current political landscape, questioning whether Ogun State should continue to allow a singular political narrative that excludes competition. He highlighted the historical exclusion of Ogun West from governorship, advocating for a legitimate aspiration for the zone after 50 years.

Showunmi urged political party chairmen to exercise caution in their leadership selections to avoid future repercussions. He also emphasized the importance of a campaign based on issues rather than monetary inducements, asserting his commitment as a bona fide son of Ogun State.
