Police Launch Operations to Secure 2027 Elections in Abuja

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the presidential elections for January 16, 2027, across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). In response, the Nigerian Police Force, led by Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu, initiated a significant operation named "Show of Force" in strategic flashpoints within Abuja and other states.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Isyaku Sharu stated that the operation commenced in densely populated areas, particularly along the Gwagwa-Karmo-Idu axis, based on credible intelligence. The operation aims to ensure the security of the election process and mitigate potential political violence as campaign activities intensify.

Sharu emphasized the importance of safety throughout the electoral process and announced plans for a peace accord signing involving all political party chairmen in the FCT. The operation will extend beyond the Abuja Municipal Area Council to include satellite towns and area councils like Abaji and Kwali, with assurances of adequate support for field officers during their duties.
