Politicians Weaponizing Fake News Ahead of 2027 Elections

As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general election, Lekan Otufodunrin, Executive Director of the Media Career Development Network, warns that politicians are increasingly using fake news as a weapon. He notes that social media, WhatsApp groups, and anonymous online pages are becoming significant channels for spreading false claims, including doctored videos and fabricated audio.

Otufodunrin states that while fake news can influence voter decisions, it may not ultimately determine the election's outcome. He emphasizes that politically loyal Nigerians, particularly those unable to distinguish between real and fake news, are especially vulnerable to misinformation.

He points out that many political media aides and online supporters are tasked with disseminating unverified claims and promoting favorable narratives. The rise of artificial intelligence poses an additional threat, as it enables the creation of realistic but manipulated content.

Otufodunrin cites past incidents, such as false claims during the Osun election, and stresses the need for improved media literacy among the populace to combat misinformation.
