Nigerian Senate Proposes Real-Time Electronic Transmission of Election Results for 2027 Polls

The Nigerian Senate has taken a significant step towards strengthening Nigeria's electoral process by proposing real-time electronic transmission of election results for the 2027 general elections. The amendment to the Electoral Act mandates the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to electronically transmit results directly from polling units to the INEC result viewing portal.

The proposal aims to curb result manipulation, ballot box snatching, and enhance transparency in the electoral system. The Senate is set to debate and consider the report further, introducing reforms such as the use of the Biometric Voter Accreditation System (BVA) and measures to protect the secrecy and integrity of the ballot.

The amendment also suggests stricter penalties for offenses like selling permanent voter cards. This move is expected to bring significant changes to Nigeria's electoral framework, emphasizing the adoption of electronic accreditation and result transmission.
