Maraya Warns Politicians Against Unrealistic Promises

Sheikh Haliru Maraya, a Kaduna-based Islamic scholar and former Special Adviser to two former governors of Kaduna State, cautioned politicians seeking elective positions in 2027 against making unrealistic promises to Nigerians. He urged presidential aspirants to be honest about the country’s economic challenges and to explain achievable goals rather than making unfulfillable promises.

Maraya reacted to calls for the restoration of fuel subsidy, stating that Nigeria could not afford the financial burden associated with it. He warned that reinstating the subsidy could lead to economic collapse, with estimates suggesting a daily cost of about N52.3 billion, totaling over N19 trillion annually.

Maraya highlighted the 2026 budget of N68.3 trillion and called for politicians to consider the broader economic implications of their campaign promises. He emphasized the need for leaders who would tell the truth about the economy and make responsible decisions regarding fuel subsidy removal.
