Tinubu Orders Resignations Ahead of 2027 Elections

President Bola Tinubu has ordered that at least seven ministers and other political appointees in Nigeria resign from their positions as they prepare to contest in the upcoming 2027 general elections. This directive aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, which mandates political appointees seeking election to step down by March 31, 2026.

A circular issued by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, outlines this requirement. The Independent National Electoral Commission has scheduled party primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026, with candidates' names to be submitted by July 11.

Several ministers, including Adebayo Adelabu, Bosun Tijani, and Said Alkali, are reportedly eyeing governorship positions in their respective states. The directive aims to ensure compliance with electoral laws and promote a level playing field as the political landscape begins to reshape ahead of the elections.
