INEC Faces Challenges Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is confronting operational challenges following a recent amendment that reduces the mandatory notice period for elections from 360 days to 300 days. Commissioner Haruna highlighted these concerns during an interaction with Daily Trust, emphasizing that the shortened preparation window could negatively impact the logistics of the upcoming 2027 general elections.

He noted that a longer preparation period would allow INEC to enhance its logistics and reduce reliance on foreign printing firms. Haruna also raised issues regarding the provisions of the 2026 Electoral Act, which limits political parties to two methods of nominating candidates: consensus and direct primaries.

He expressed reservations about the consensus option, arguing it could undermine public scrutiny and transparency in the electoral process. Additionally, Haruna addressed the low voter turnout in previous elections and reiterated INEC's responsibility to educate citizens about voting procedures.

He mentioned that the appointment of the INEC chairman is at the discretion of the President, subject to Senate confirmation, and stressed the importance of reform and adequate planning for future elections.
