INEC Faces Challenges with Election Day Adjustments

Mohammed Haruna, during a Trust TV program, addressed the setbacks faced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) concerning the adjustment of election days, particularly in relation to the Ramadan fasting period. He noted that the Senate is considering amendments to the Electoral Act to reduce the notice period for elections from 360 days to 300 days, which could facilitate adjustments for the 2027 general elections.

Haruna highlighted that INEC's biggest achievement under Professor Mahmood Yakubu's leadership is the ability to print ballot papers domestically, which requires resources sourced within Nigeria. He raised concerns about the low voter turnout observed during the last Federal Capital Territory elections and emphasized the importance of civic education to encourage participation.

Furthermore, Haruna expressed his inclination to give the benefit of the doubt regarding the appointment of Joash Amupitan as INEC chairman, stressing the need for objectivity and fairness in the electoral process.
