Rising Political Violence Threatens Nigeria's 2027 Elections

The political landscape in Nigeria is becoming increasingly fraught as the 2027 presidential campaign approaches. A recent incident during an African Democratic Congress (ADC) rally in Kaduna State on September 10 turned violent when suspected political thugs attacked ADC supporters.

The Kaduna State Police Command deployed tear gas to disperse protesters blocking roads, citing the need to maintain public order. ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi condemned the violence, warning that no party has a monopoly on such actions.

Since the commencement of public campaigns for the elections on August 19, there has been a notable rise in pre-electoral violence, particularly involving All Progressives Congress (APC) governors. Additionally, on September 8, the convoy of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi was blocked by thugs in Benue State, forcing him to turn back.

The APC-controlled Benue State government denied involvement in the confrontation but did not condemn the attack.
