Two Ministers Resign to Contest in 2027 Elections

On March 27, 2026, two ministers from President Bola Tinubu's cabinet, Yusuf Tuggar and Yusuf Sununu, officially resigned to pursue electoral positions in the upcoming 2027 general elections. Tuggar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, intends to contest for the governorship of Bauchi State, while Sununu, the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, is aiming for a senatorial seat in Kebbi State.

Their resignations align with the requirements set forth in the Electoral Act 2026, which mandates political appointees to step down to participate in party primaries. Tuggar's resignation was confirmed by his spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, who noted his gratitude for the opportunity to implement foreign policy strategies during his tenure.

Sununu's resignation was formalized following his appointment in August 2023, where he represented the Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski Federal Constituency. The Independent National Electoral Commission has scheduled party primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026, with the presidential and national assembly elections set for August 8, 2026.
