Challenges for Atiku and Obi in 2027 Coalition Talks

Umar Ardo, a political strategist and Convener of the League of Northern Democrats, discussed the challenges facing potential coalitions for the 2027 presidential election. He stated that Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, lacks the inclination to withdraw from the race.

In contrast, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has the ability to step down but would risk alienating his support base. Ardo emphasized that while Atiku could retain his supporters if he were to withdraw, it is highly improbable that he would take such a step.

He noted that unless these two significant challenges are resolved, a merger between the candidates is unlikely. However, he also mentioned that both candidates possess the capacity to win the election individually, depending on their strategies.
