Nyesom Wike's Coalition Challenges APC Loyalty Ahead of 2027

The ongoing disagreement between Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and governors from the All Progressives Congress (APC) presents a new political loyalty challenge for President Bola Tinubu as the 2027 general elections approach. Wike's initiative, the Rainbow Coalition, is intended to garner support for Tinubu's re-election while permitting political parties to maintain their identities and field candidates in other elections.

However, APC governors have firmly stated their commitment to supporting only APC candidates, rejecting any alliances that could undermine the party's strength. Wike, a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), insists that his support for Tinubu does not equate to backing the APC or its candidates in other contests.

He clarified that the Rainbow Coalition is not affiliated with the APC and emphasized that he never promised the PDP would abstain from fielding candidates in various elections. Hope Uzodimma, Imo State governor and chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, reiterated that APC governors would not endorse any political arrangements that could weaken the party or its candidates.
