Nigerian Doctor Adaobi Nnani Dies in Ukraine Airstrike

Adaobi Nnani, a 23-year-old Nigerian medical doctor, died as a result of a Russian airstrike in Ukraine. The incident occurred on June 29, 2023, in Kharkiv, where she was present to collect her diploma from Kharkiv National Medical University.

Adaobi sustained 90% burns to her body during the attack, which also claimed the life of her close friend, Fatima Ilya Kizi. Both women were in Kharkiv for a graduation photo session when a Russian-guided aerial bomb struck.

Adaobi and Fatima had traveled to Ukraine from Azerbaijan, where they were studying remotely, to attend the graduation ceremony scheduled for June 30, 2026. This tragic event marks the second death of a Nigerian medical graduate due to the ongoing conflict, highlighting the severe impact of the war on international students.
