26 Rescued, 8 Dead in Lagos Building Collapse

On Thursday, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) reported that 26 individuals were rescued and eight, including a baby girl, were confirmed dead after a three-story shop complex collapsed in the Alakija area of Lagos. The update was issued at 4:20 PM, indicating that search and rescue operations were ongoing to locate additional victims trapped beneath the rubble.

Dr. Olufemi Ok Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, confirmed that two victims were initially rescued alive through a joint effort involving LASEMA and the Lagos State Building Control Agency, alongside China Railway Construction Corporation.

Recovery efforts included the use of heavy-duty equipment for systematic excavation of debris. LASEMA urged residents and onlookers to maintain distance from the scene to allow emergency personnel to carry out their operations effectively.

The cause of the building collapse has yet to be officially determined.
