ILO's Dr. Houngbo Addresses Gender Equality at ITUC-Africa Conference

The 2nd ITUC-Africa Women’s Biennial Conference commenced in Lomé, providing a platform for over 200 delegates to discuss women's experiences regarding illicit financial flows and debt burdens. Dr Gilbert Houngbo, the Director-General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), addressed participants virtually, stressing the necessity for governments and trade unions to enhance women's inclusion in decision-making roles.
He noted that the conference theme was timely due to significant changes in Africa's work environment driven by digitalisation, climate change, and economic restructuring. Houngbo highlighted that these changes would not ensure equality unless women were adequately represented in leadership and decision-making.
He called for the ratification of ILO Convention 190 to combat workplace violence and harassment. Mr Fantowou Burno, representing the Ministry of Labour and Social Justice, pointed out the discrimination women face and advocated for stronger workplace protections.
The conference aims to promote gender equality, social justice, and women's leadership within the African trade union movement.
