ITUC-Africa Conference Calls for Enhanced Funding for Women

The ITUC-Africa Women’s Conference, held in Lome, gathered over 250 delegates from across Africa and international partner organizations. The conference focused on the necessity of adequate funding for women-focused programs to enhance women's participation and representation in trade union activities and decision-making processes.
Comrade Martha Molema, President of ITUC-Africa, underscored the importance of recognizing women's contributions to the workforce and criticized the underfunding of women's committees. The conference concluded with a draft resolution presented by Rapporteur Comrade Fiona Gandiwa Magaya, which included building alliances beyond the trade union movement and creating spaces led by women to determine their priorities.
The conference also resolved to bridge trade unions with women in the informal economy to promote decent work and support women-owned enterprises. Comrade Joel Odigie, General Secretary of ITUC-Africa, commended the conference's success and urged participants to continue working towards the agreed targets ahead of the next conference scheduled for 2028.
