33 Suspects Arraigned for Okporojo Killings in Ebonyi

On Friday, the Ebonyi State High Court in Abakaliki arraigned thirty-three suspects in connection with the Okporojo killings that occurred on January 29, 2026, in the Idima Edda community of Afikpo Local Government Area, Ebonyi State. The suspects face four counts of murder and arson, with charges stemming from the alleged killing of Kalu Dick and others.

Among the accused are Geoffrei Onya Idam Bassei, a traditional ruler, and Baron Anya, a former coordinator of the Amasiri Development Centre. The suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Their defense counsel, Chief Mudi Erhened, made a bail application for five of the accused, citing their prolonged custody of five months. However, the state's counsel, Chinyer Anok, opposed the bail application, arguing that the accused face serious murder charges.

The presiding judge, Justice Emmanuel Ogbunnefi, adjourned the matter to June 5 for further proceedings, while the defense was instructed to file a written bail application for the court's consideration.
