Nigeria Police Games Set for Asaba: 6,000 Athletes Compete

The Nigeria Police Games are set to occur in Asaba from February 14 to February 21, with an expected participation of 6,000 athletes and officials. The event will feature 37 sports, including the newly introduced mixed martial arts, aimed at modernizing competition and widening participation.

Fom Bam Joseph, the Assistant Inspector General of Police, highlighted that the games will include representatives from every police command across 17 zones, ensuring nationwide participation. The competition will not strictly adhere to universal age categories across events, as a veteran category has been created to ensure fairness and safety.

Joseph noted that mixed martial arts is particularly designed to exclude older participants who may face significant competition from younger officers. The games will also feature traditional sports events, including football, where police teams compete in the national league system, with the core objective being to discover and groom athletic talent capable of representing Nigeria on a global stage.
