Lagos Records 69 Road Deaths in Q1 2026, LASTMA Reports

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), 69 individuals lost their lives in road accidents during the first quarter of 2026. Additionally, 246 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in this period.

Mr. Olalekan Bakar Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, disclosed in an interview that the agency responded to over 600 accidents and resolved 900 infractions involving articulated vehicles. LASTMA's enforcement efforts included capturing 17,942 offenses through technology-driven solutions.

The agency maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards traffic infractions, promptly impounding vehicles and arraigning offenders in Lagos State's mobile courts. To enhance service delivery, LASTMA has initiated a comprehensive overhaul of traffic management equipment and is training personnel to improve response times to traffic incidents.

A year-long training calendar has been outlined for 2026, aiming to train 1,000 staff members through both internal and external training programs.
