Coach Bonfrère Jo Still Awaits Olympic Reward After 29 Years

Johannes "Bonfrère" Jo, the 80-year-old Dutch coach who led Nigeria's Dream Team to its first Olympic gold medal in football at the 1996 Atlanta Games, has expressed frustration over not receiving any official reward or recognition from the Nigerian government nearly 29 years after the historic victory. Bonfrère guided Nigeria to defeat Brazil 4-3 in the semi-finals and Argentina 3-2 in the final, with notable players including Nwankwo Kanu and Austin Okocha.

While many players received national honors and rewards, Bonfrère's contributions were overlooked. He was promised a plot of land in Lagos by then-Military Administrator Col.

Olagunsoye Oyinlola, a pledge that remains unfulfilled. His Olympic gold medal was stolen while in the custody of a Nigerian team official, which he described as a painful moment.

Bonfrère's lawyers have petitioned the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to compel the Lagos State Government to explain the delay in fulfilling the land promise.
