Team Nigeria's Adama rewarded for historic Commonwealth feat

Joseph Odobeatu, a sports philanthropist and South-East representative on the board of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAqF), welcomed Team Nigeria’s swimmers back home after their participation in the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. He presented a cash reward of $300 to 17-year-old Abduljabar Adama for his historic achievement as the first Nigerian swimmer to qualify for a final at the Commonwealth Games.

Competing in the men’s 50-metre butterfly, Adama finished fourth, narrowly missing a podium finish. Odobeatu praised the entire Nigerian contingent, including Clinton Opute, Collins Ebinga, and Dorcas Oka, for their performances, which he described as a breakthrough for Nigeria's aquatic sports.

He acknowledged the support from the National Sports Commission, led by Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade, for their role in the athletes' preparations. Odobeatu emphasized the need for continued investment in grassroots sports development to foster future swimming champions in Nigeria.
