Nigerians Face Violence in South Africa Amid Evacuations

Musa Yunana Joe and Charles Iroegbu, two Nigerian nationals, were killed in South Africa on June 28, 2026, amid a surge of anti-migrant violence. Joe was allegedly killed by South African police, while Iroegbu's attackers remain unidentified.

This violence occurred shortly before an unofficial deadline set by anti-migrant vigilantes for foreigners to leave the country. The situation reflects a troubling trend, as this marks the fourth significant wave of violence against migrants in South Africa, following similar incidents in 2008, 2015, and 2019.

Despite Nigeria's substantial financial contributions to the African National Congress (ANC) and the Pan African Congress—totaling $61 billion by 1994—Nigerians continue to face violence and discrimination in South Africa. By early July, nearly 600 Nigerians had been evacuated due to the escalating violence, with many abandoning their homes and businesses.

The ongoing violence raises questions about how South Africa repays Nigeria for its historical support.
