Anti-Immigrant Movements in South Africa Critiqued

Kio Amachree, a Stockholm-based Nigerian writer, criticized the recent anti-immigrant movements in South Africa, asserting that they are not grassroots efforts but rather funded by external sources. He referenced a statement from researchers at Wits University, indicating that the movement lacks genuine grassroots support and is instead a coordinated effort with hidden financial backing.

Amachree pointed out that the movement is led by Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, alongside regional figures like Mthokozisi Gumede, and described it as a political project masquerading as patriotism. He quoted former President Thabo Mbeki, who labeled the movement a counter-revolutionary project.

South African Minister of Justice, Mamoloko Kubayi, also noted that foreign entities are inciting unrest. Amachree emphasized that the actions of Black South Africans against fellow Africans are reminiscent of apartheid, undermining the sacrifices made by freedom fighters.
