“A breeding ground for anarchy” – Ohanaeze warns Tinubu against pay rise for politicians

Ohanaeze Ndigbo has issued a warning to President Bola Tinubu against approving a salary increase for political office holders, calling it a "breeding ground for anarchy." The Igbo organization emphasized that amidst rising hardship, such a move could lead to widespread unrest and chaos in Nigeria. They pointed out that the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) does not have the unilateral power to increase salaries, citing a 2021 court judgment that ordered a review and reduction of lawmakers' salaries in line with economic conditions.

Ohanaeze urged the government to prioritize solidarity with Nigerians by cutting excessive politician pay rather than approving raises, cautioning that proceeding with the proposal could incite similar unrest seen in other countries like Kenya and Venezuela.
