Abia Benefits from $750m World Bank Renewable Energy Programme, Collaborates with ISA to Develop Mini-grids

Abia State Government has benefitted from a $750 million World Bank renewable energy programme, aiming to enhance power supply and reduce reliance on the national grid. The State Commissioner of Information, Prince Okey Kanu, announced the collaboration with the International Solar Alliance (ISA) to develop mini-grids.

The DARES programme will boost the electricity sector in Abia, with the ISA supporting the state in establishing a conducive environment for private sector investment in solar power projects. The ISA, formed in 2015, aims to promote solar energy globally.

Abia has already laid the groundwork for a thriving power sector with the State Electricity Law of 2025 and is utilizing direct labor to save costs on road projects, with over 54 projects completed or ongoing. The government's focus is on driving industrial growth and sustainable development in Abia.
