Abia State to Re-Gazette Autonomous Communities for Peace

The Abia State Government is set to re-gazette autonomous communities to effectively tackle ongoing communal crises within the state. Uzor Nwachukwu, who disclosed this information during a meeting in Umuahia with the President General of the Town Development Union, noted that the last review was conducted eleven years ago.

This previous oversight has led to confusion and conflicts among villages, particularly concerning the status of two autonomous communities that were incorrectly gazetted. Nwachukwu highlighted that the government receives approximately fifty petitions weekly from various villages regarding these issues.

To address these challenges, the Abia State Government plans to establish a conflict management and mediation center across local government areas. This initiative aims to clarify the roles of traditional rulers and ensure that community leadership structures are properly organized and recognized.

Alex Otti, the governor, is involved in overseeing these security matters, alongside Macdonald Uba, a retired naval commander.
