Abia Government Addresses 70-Year Land Dispute

The Abia State Government is taking steps to resolve a longstanding 70-year land dispute between the Amabiaelu autonomous community and the Umuhuezechi autonomous community in Igber Bend Local Government Area. Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu provided assurances during a conciliatory meeting with community leaders in Umuahia.

He emphasized the government's deep concern for maintaining peace, security, and harmonious coexistence among communities in the state. The land dispute, which dates back to 1950, has undergone various judicial processes, including rulings from the Supreme Court.

Emetu highlighted the importance of respecting court judgments and stated that the Abia State Boundary Committee would not act as an appellate body. He urged the communities to embrace dialogue and mutual respect, stressing that no piece of land is worth human life.

Bassei Uwabunkony, Chairman of the Bend Local Government Area, expressed concerns over recurring security reports related to the dispute. Traditional ruler Chigaemez Onwuchekwa welcomed the government's intervention and called for a fair and just resolution.
