Abia State Local Government Workers Demand Salary Resolution

Local government workers in Abia State may initiate a three-day warning strike if the state government does not address outstanding salary arrears and promotion issues affecting employees across the 17 local government areas. The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) issued this warning in a letter dated September 21, 2026, to the Abia State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
The union reported that 114 workers have not received salaries for nearly three years, with 92 having completed the necessary verification but still awaiting payment. Additionally, 22 workers are pending verification, while over 251 employees have received only partial payments despite completing verification.
NULGE's General Secretary, Comrade Gambo Isah, emphasized the urgent need for government intervention to resolve these issues, which have persisted despite previous engagements with authorities. The union also highlighted that local government workers are owed salaries for November and December 2020 and have not had their promotions implemented since 2021.
