ASUU Threatens Strike Over Unpaid Salaries, Agreements

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a warning about potentially resuming its suspended nationwide strike, citing the Federal Government and certain state governments' failure to honor the 2025 agreement with the union. This announcement was made by ASUU's National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, following an emergency meeting of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) on September 5, 2026.

Piwuna emphasized that ASUU could activate the strike without further notice if their demands, including three-and-a-half months of withheld salaries, unremitted pension deductions, and violations of university autonomy, are not addressed. He acknowledged some efforts by the Federal Ministry of Education to resolve salary issues in certain Federal Universities of Agriculture but criticized the lack of a sustainable solution.

ASUU praised governors like Abia State's Alex Otti for implementing the agreement but warned that failure by other governors could lead to significant industrial unrest in state-owned universities.
