Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, ordered the immediate arrest of the owner of a multi-story hotel that collapsed on Friday, November 3, 2023, in Jikwoyi, Abuja. He announced the seizure of the land for public use to build a cave around the site. Following the collapse, which triggered an emergency response, Wike visited the site on Tuesday to assess the damage. He noted that the building was constructed without the necessary approvals from the FCT Department of Development Control, which had previously issued stop-work notices that were ignored. Although no fatalities were reported, several individuals sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital. Wike emphasized that the government would prosecute those responsible for illegal construction and that local communities would be consulted to determine suitable public purpose projects for the reclaimed site. He reiterated the importance of compliance with building regulations to prevent future incidents.
