Abuja Residents Decry AEDC's Unconsulted Tariff Hike

Residents in Abuja have voiced their dissatisfaction with the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) for increasing electricity tariffs without prior consultation. Juliet Ogheneovo, a resident, noted that she used to receive 89.9 units for N5,000 but found the amount reduced to 73.4 units after the increase.

Malik Abubakar, another resident, reported a similar experience, receiving only 51.7 units for the same amount. Carolin Uneru and Stephen Adelaja also confirmed reductions in the units received for their prepaid meter purchases.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) mandates that tariff adjustments should reflect the cost of electricity generation and distribution, but NERC officials stated that no tariff review had been conducted, emphasizing that any changes would involve stakeholder consultations. AEDC has promised to investigate the issue, but residents remain frustrated with the lack of regular power supply and transparency regarding tariff increases.
