FCT Residents Report Unannounced Electricity Tariff Hike

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), particularly in Kubwa and Lugbe, have alleged an increase in electricity tariffs without prior consultation. Juliet Ogheneovo, a resident of Kubwa, noted that she typically received 89.9 units for N5,000 but found her recent purchase yielded only 73.4 units.

Similarly, Malik Abubakar, also from Kubwa, reported a decrease from 89.9 units to 51.7 units for the same amount. Carolin Uneru from Lugbe expressed surprise at the reduction in units received when recharging her prepaid meter, stating that she received 88.2 units instead of the expected 99.6 units for N6,000.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has mandated an increase in electricity tariffs to ensure they reflect the costs of generation and distribution. However, NERC officials have stated that there has been no review of electricity tariffs recently, and the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the alleged increments.
