NGSA Confirms No Ongoing Seismic Activity in Abuja

The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) has reassured residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) that the earth tremor recorded on August 4, 2026, has completely subsided and poses no threat to lives and property. This assurance followed over five days of continuous seismic monitoring and assessments by the Agency.

Professor Olusegun Ige, the Director-General of NGSA, reported that the tremor was recorded at 11:23:27 a.m. on August 4, lasting approximately five seconds and originating from a depth of less than one kilometre. He characterized it as a low-energy, transient micro-event.

The NGSA conducted physical assessments at various locations, including the Defence Intelligence Agency facility and NNPC Towers, finding no structural damage or injuries. The tremor was attributed to the release of accumulated stresses within the earth's crust, but it did not indicate a destructive earthquake.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Mr. Dele Alake, had directed the NGSA to provide hourly updates during the monitoring period.
