ACReSAL and World Bank Advance Nigeria's Catchment Plans

The Federal Government is close to completing implementation-focused engagements for the Strategic Catchment Management Plans (SCMPs) in Nigeria, marking a significant advancement in environmental governance. This shift was highlighted during a high-level stakeholder engagement at the Crispan Hotel in Jos, Plateau State.
The workshop represents the final consultations for the last 10 of 20 strategic catchments, which include Aloma-Konshisha, Lokoja-Niger, and others. Dr. Iganya Joy Agene, ACReSAL Task Team Leader and World Bank Senior Environment Specialist, emphasized the need for multi-agency collaboration to safeguard natural assets.
She stated that the successful execution of the plans requires participation from various ministries, state governments, and local communities. The SCMPs are described as “living documents” meant to guide sustainable management over five- to ten-year periods.
Shettima Admas, representing National Project Coordinator Abdulhamid Umar, discussed the operational roadmap for this transition, highlighting the opportunity for inter-state collaboration across the participating states.
