ActionAid, NLC Criticize FG Over Debt and Poverty Issues

On Tuesday, during a press conference in Abuja, ActionAid, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and various civil society organizations expressed strong criticism of the Nigerian government's economic policies, particularly regarding rising debt and poverty levels. Eustace James, the Assistant General Secretary of the NLC, emphasized the need for policies that strengthen the economy rather than exacerbate hardships for citizens.

He pointed out that the removal of fuel subsidies was expected to provide resources for public services but has instead left citizens worse off. Auwal Rafsanjani, Executive Director of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, noted that the country's increasing debt burden, which has surpassed N60 trillion, has not translated into improved living standards.

He criticized the National Assembly for approving loan requests without sufficient scrutiny. Andrew Mamedu from ActionAid raised concerns about budget inflation and public spending inefficiencies, while Celestin Okwudili urged the government to reconsider subsidy reforms to alleviate economic pressures on citizens.
