ActionAid Calls for Spending Cuts to Boost Education, Health

ActionAid Nigeria has called on the Federal and state governments to redirect public spending from what it termed “prestige projects” and excessive government luxuries towards investments that enhance the lives of Nigerians. This appeal was made in response to President Bola Tinubu's directive to state governors to cease constructing unnecessary flyovers in areas without traffic congestion and to focus on projects that meet citizens' needs.

Dr. Andrew Mamedu, the Country Director of ActionAid Nigeria, stated that the president's comments should initiate a national discussion on public finance, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing people-centered development.

The organization criticized the current pattern of public expenditure that favors prestige over citizens’ welfare, noting that millions of Nigerians face economic hardship. ActionAid highlighted that the proposed budget allocation for President Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima for local and foreign travel, food, and refreshments is N9.36 billion for 2026, suggesting that cutting this by half could fund essential public services.
