ADC Attacks Tinubu Government Over Onanuga's 'No Hunger' Remarks

Opposition party says presidential spokesman's comments dismissing hardship show administration is disconnected from suffering Nigerians face.

The African Democratic Congress has launched a sharp rebuke of the Tinubu administration following statements by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga in which he claimed not to observe widespread hunger or economic hardship across Nigeria. The opposition party's national public secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, characterized the remarks as evidence of a profound gap between government leadership and the lived experiences of ordinary citizens grappling with rising costs and deteriorating economic conditions.

Onanuga's comments emerged during a media interview where he defended the administration's economic policies. He stated that he does not witness the level of hunger that Nigerians frequently report, and noted that the government has increased the minimum wage by 100 percent as a response to cost-of-living pressures.

His remarks prompted the ADC's formal response the following day. The ADC's Abdullahi described Onanuga's statement as a damning admission of the government's detachment from reality.

The opposition party contended that citizens are genuinely experiencing hardship and are not fabricating their suffering. Abdullahi suggested that the remarks reflect a broader mindset within the Tinubu administration and characterized the situation as a historical failure on the government's part to acknowledge the consequences of its economic policies.

According to the ADC's position statement, the disconnect between the administration's perception and citizens' experiences represents a critical problem for governance. The party has previously held that the Tinubu administration operates without adequate understanding of the struggles facing millions of Nigerians.

Onanuga's public comments have intensified perceptions among opposition figures that the current government remains isolated from public concerns about livelihood and economic stability.
