Akpabio Declares ADC "Dead" Amidst Mass Defections

On Tuesday, during a Senate plenary session, Godswill Akpabio remarked on the declining status of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stating that the party appears "dead" following a significant wave of defections. He noted that over 17 lawmakers have defected from the ADC to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Labour Party (LP), citing unresolved crises within the ADC's national and downward structure as the primary reason for these exits.

Akpabio humorously referenced Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe's previous switch from the ADC to the Progress Grand Alliance (APGA) and then to the Labour Party. The trend of lawmakers frequently changing parties has raised concerns about the stability of the ADC, which is currently facing leadership disputes and internal litigation.

The ongoing defections are expected to weaken the ADC's bargaining power within the opposition bloc as the 2027 general elections approach, intensifying pressure on the party's leadership to address internal grievances.
