ADC Demands Transparency on £746M UK Port Deal

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for complete transparency regarding a £746 million agreement signed during President Bola Tinubu's state visit to the United Kingdom. The ADC, represented by Bolaji Abdullahi, criticized the deal, which aims to upgrade port infrastructure at two of Nigeria's busiest maritime centers in Lagos, claiming it disproportionately benefits the UK while leaving Nigeria with a heavy debt burden.

The agreement, which is approximately $997 million, is expected to enhance trade and generate employment but raises concerns about local economic impacts. The ADC urged the federal government to disclose details such as interest rates, repayment schedules, local content requirements, and job creation timelines.

They highlighted that a significant portion of the funds may remain in the UK, questioning the overall benefit to Nigeria. The ADC expressed that the agreement resembles colonial-era treaties, risking Nigeria's future and limiting its value, especially as many Nigerians continue to face poverty and unemployment.
